A Word from Our Director of Nursing
“Hi! My name is Sheri Adasczik. I am the Director of Nursing services here at El Jen Convalescent and Retirement. I have worked for El Jen for the past 16 years. Our facility offers 24 hour nursing care and three distinct levels of care.”

Assisted Living
Are you looking for an assisted living facility where your loved one can enjoy comfort and companionship while still maintaining the highest level of independence and personal freedom possible? Our assisted living unit offers a variety of nursing services, including skilled services provided in a very home-like setting. Perhaps your loved one only needs diabetic monitoring, insulin administration and medication monitoring? We can help. What’s more, this unit is staffed with a registered nurse (RN) 24 hours a day and we have nursing assistants that can meet the complex yet important needs of your loved one, all while allowing your loved one a sense of home and independence.

Rehabilitation
Our rehabilitation unit was uniquely designed as it provides semi-private rooms with a wall between the beds for an enhanced feeling of privacy. This unique design also gives a homelike atmosphere.

Each individual who is accepted for rehabilitation is carefully evaluated according to certain established criteria. Upon acceptance, our highly trained therapeutic team becomes intensively involved in regimented programs tailored to the resident’s individual needs.

In addition to 24-hour nursing services, our therapeutic team consists of a rehab medical director, physical, occupational, and speech therapists. The primary goal is to develop a plan to assist the resident in returning to his / her previous living arrangements if possible.

Retirement
Are you looking for a facility where your loved one can enjoy comfort and companionship while still maintaining the highest level of independence and personal freedom possible?  Our retirement unit offers a variety of nursing services, including skilled services that are provided in a very homelike setting. Perhaps your loved one only needs diabetic monitoring, insulin administration and medication monitoring. We can help. What’s more, this unit is staffed with licensed nurses and CNAs (certified nursing assistants) 24 hours a day who can meet the individual needs of your loved one, all while allowing your loved one a sense of home and independence.

Throughout the retirement unit you will find sitting areas as well as our large living room where residents of the facility can go to read books, watch TV or movies, as well as having a quiet out of the way place to visit with their family.

"Long-Term" or Custodial Care
Our long-term care (custodial) area can accommodate 74 residents. We have 12 private rooms with the remaining rooms semi-private. Although referred to as our custodial unit, the services provided here include any skilled service from wound care, tube feedings, diabetic monitoring, etc.

Dietary Services
The dietary department goes out of its way to provide meals that are home cooked. The dietary department plays a key role in not only providing nutritious meals but also in identifying the individual likes and dislikes as well as eating patterns prior to admission to make the resident’s dining experience as homelike as possible. Our kitchen is able to provide our residents with mechanically or therapeutic diets as ordered by his / her attending physician. Some of these special diets include but are not limited to diabetic restrictions, low sodium, low cholesterol, pureed, mechanical soft, renal diet, regular, etc. All meals are served restaurant style.

Elderly coupleA Note on Dining from Our Dietary Department
“Hi! Welcome to the dietary department. My name is Sharon Jones, certified dietary supervisor. With seven years of loyal service to El Jen and its residents, and over 30 years of dietary expertise in nursing homes, I'm proud of my staff and the home cooked meals offered at El Jen. We accommodate any special dietary need, from diabetic, to low cholesterol, pureed and regular diets. We do more than just serve food, we maintain ideal body weights, encourage appetites, and do special treats every now and then. Below is a sample of a week's menu offered at our facility. Substitutions are offered for those with picky tastes or special needs. Snacks are offered between meals and any time during the day or night a resident get the “munchies”. Resident council approves all menus and takes an active part in choosing the menu we serve. Once a month the council even plans three meals of their choice, usually crab or lobster!! Come join us for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The meal is on us!!!”

Sample Menu Items
Our sample menu items include spaghetti with meat sauce and garlic toast; roast pork with seasoned vegetables; or for those who eat lighter, a variety of soups and sandwiches. Each meal is complemented with a homemade dessert and a beverage of choice. These are just a few of the home-cooked, well-balanced meal options we serve at El Jen.

Medical Services
Most medical services provided to a resident are coordinated via the efforts of the physician in charge, nursing staff and social services professionals. Transportation is provided at a small charge for appointments to specialists, such as eye, hearing, pain management, orthopedic follow up or any other specialist outside the facility. The transportation services we provide can also include an aide to accompany the resident if the family is unavailable.

To ensure the highest quality of care, once a month the medical director meets with all department heads to ensure that quality of care and quality of life is maintained. In conjunction with the efforts of the Director of Nursing Services, El Jen Healthcare Center and Rehabilitation constantly critiques its own program and resident needs to ensure that each resident is receiving individualized care of the highest quality.

Each of our service areas are staffed with caring individuals who are dedicated to providing quality of care to our residents. For many of the staff members, El Jen Healthcare is a second home and family. Of our 150 employees, more than half are part of the 10-year plus program. This has allowed us to provide quality of care to Southern Nevada families in a homelike environment. The success of our facility is based on our family approach. It helps our residents to adjust to placement in a facility and become part of our extended family.

Activities

Our family of activity coordinators is proud to offer more than just activities. They offer a way of life. From diner's club in the evening to outings at nearby casinos each activity enriches the lives of those we serve.

Most mornings begin with Bingo, or a coffee social time depending on the interests of the resident. Mid-morning before lunch the restorative department offers an exercise class for every resident regardless of their disability. During the afternoon, depending on the day of the week or the schedule, we offer cooking class, crafts, classic or new release movies, manicures and sometimes a special guest sharing a talent. Every month has a theme and one big get together for residents and their families. Theme parties include a Winter Party in January, a Valentines' Sweetheart ball in February where residents crown a King and Queen, and during the summer we have outdoor Barbecues with all American hamburgers and hot dogs! Come join us for a great time!

El Jen also offers different religious services throughout the month. They are usually held once a week in the living room of the Assisted Living area for all residents.

Beauty shop services are also available by a licensed cosmetologist in the Beauty Shop of the facility. Services include haircuts, perms, coloring and shampoo and sets. Prices range from $8.00 to $27.00 depending on the service.

Financing & FAQs

All of our rates are inclusive, except for medications and oxygen supplies. We are more than happy to work with any pharmacy to meet our resident's medication needs. Ancillary supplies, including diapers are provided at the facility at no extra charge. We accept most insurance plans for long term or respite care and contract with local Hospice agencies to provide comfort care and respite. We accept Medicaid, Medicare and County assistance programs and offer in house counseling to help financially plan for a resident's stay, whether long or short term.

WHERE DO I START?

This is one of the most commonly asked questions I receive throughout the day. Very seldom do we receive inquires from the patients themselves. This task of finding a facility is usually a loved one's responsibility. Prior to any illnesses in a family, what relationship would one have with a nursing home in their community? Likely none. The best place to start is with friends and family? Have they had any experiences in a local facility? What about your family doctor? Visit the facilities they recommend and even a few of your own, through the yellow pages or other advertisements.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR ON THE INITIAL TOUR

Always tour more than one facility. It is often advised that one should just drop in for a tour. I like to tell families that this is home to many people and strangers just wandering through their home can be scary. Always find a contact person at the facility. The first impression you receive from this person will set the tone for your tour and either provide you with a good feeling or uncertainty. As you walk through the facility, OBSERVE! Do residents look well groomed, happy, occupied? Is their any staff interaction? Acknowledge any residents you may pass, do they answer? Stop and strike up a conversation with a resident, casually ask them about their stay at the facility. Share your own experience. You may be pleasantly surprised at how much a resident knows!! Last but not least, is there an odor? Distinguish between a lingering odor and an accident that may have just occurred prior to your visit!! With these few tips in mind, I hope to see you soon at El Jen!

HOW DO I TRANSFER MY LOVED ONE FROM ANOTHER STATE?

With more and more people moving to Las Vegas each month, it's hard to leave a parent or loved one behind in a nursing home. El Jen has assisted families from Florida, New York, and as close as California in transferring their loved one to Las Vegas. Each facility has its own guidelines. At El Jen we try to make this transfer as simple as possible for everyone involved. Once you have chosen a facility have the transferring facility make contact with the admissions department. Information about your loved one should include a history and physical, medication list, nursing needs, and who is paying for the nursing home in the other state. Once an assessment by our admission department is complete and we feel confident that we can provide continuity of care, just make a date, transportation arrangements, and we'll do the rest! We provide transportation from the airport if necessary and assistance with any state or county applications upon admittance.

WHO PAYS FOR THE NURSING HOME CARE?

Most facilities accept Medicare, Medicaid, County Assistance, Veterans Assistance, Private funds, and private insurance. Determining who pays first, and for what and when can be tricky. Medicare has guidelines in determining when a stay is covered. Usually, but not always, a resident coming from an acute care facility after a three day qualifying stay is covered by Medicare for a period not to exceed 100 days. This is not a guaranteed coverage and certain levels of care must be met. Contact the facilities admission department for information specific to your loved one's needs for a more comprehensive assessment of Medicare coverage.
